We recently caught up with Minx, Colour Creative from our Myer counter in Melbourne, Australia. Minx was the winner of this year’s Distinction in Make-Up Artistry Awards in the Illamasqua Team category. We chatted to her just before the competition, so take a read to find out all about her experiences and tips.
Hey Minx! Can you sum up your role for us?
My role at Illamasqua as a Colour Creative ranges from anything as simple to helping someone find their best Skin Base shade, through to one on one lessons, makeup workshops and even makeovers.
How long have you been at Illamasqua?
I have been with Illamasqua for just under one year now. It is the first makeup brand I have ever worked for and I feel so lucky to have been able to work for my favourite brand as my first MUA job!
What is a typical day in the store like for you?
A typical day in the store usually entails a couple of makeover appointments as well as helping people who visit our counter to find the products they are looking for. Oh, and the obligatory insta-selfie of course!
Name something you worked on that you’re particularly proud of
I am particularly proud of my DIMUAA entry that earned me my spot to represent Illamasqua Australia this year. Of course, I went for a bold theatrical makeup and I was unsure as to whether I could cut down my application time to under one hour but I managed in the end.
What do you love most about working at Illamasqua?
The thing I love most about Illamasqua is the fact that the company’s attitude towards makeup is similar to my own. I don’t believe makeup should be used to try and obtain the perfection the media pushes on us these days. If that were the case, you would see me wearing Rich Liquid on my white forehead mark. I believe makeup is about creativity and fun, my face is literally my canvas. Also, things like being a cruelty free brand and having a fair price structure for Australia are part of the reason I fell in love with Illamasqua.
What tips do you have for anyone wanting to break into the same job role?
My tips for anyone to break into a role at Illamasqua would be to build a good portfolio for yourself, regardless of whether you are a trained MUA or not, present yourself well and go introduce yourself to your local counter.
If you could swap roles with someone else in the company for a day who would it be and why?
If I could swap roles with anyone in the company, it would probably be with Alex Box. She is an idol of mine and I would love to be in the position she is, allowing her creativity to flow freely into the hearts of every Illamasqua enthusiast in the world.
What is your favourite Illamasqua product?
I am terrible at choosing favourites, but I always say, if I were only allowed one lick of makeup stepping out of the house, it’d be my brows. Brow Cake and Sealing Gel and my most loved products, however, I do go through a lot of Anja Powder Eye Shadow too.
Do you have any makeup tips for us?
My main makeup tip for everyone is practice!! All the things that people find tricky (winged liner, false lashes, cream contouring, etc.) get better with practice. And the wonderful thing about makeup is that if you make a mistake, it washes off!!
Minx competed against three other Illamasqua team members, having just an hour to complete the make-up live on stage. The brief was textiles vs. art and this is what Minx came up with:

On winning, she said: “I WON!! Thankyou so much to everyone who has supported me in my makeup adventures!!”
Thanks to Minx for answering our questions, we hope you found the insight into Minx’s job and her experience at DIMUAA as interesting as we did. If you love Minx’s work as much as we do, be sure to follow her on Instagram: @MissMinxette.
