Interviewing our AW12 real models: Mairi

In the build up to the unveiling of our AW12 collection which follows on from our Beauty Before Age campaign, we will be revealing each of our fabulous real models, as nominated by our fans and followers, their daughters, fathers, uncles, friends… and today the spotlight turns to Mairi.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am 39 and from Edinburgh, Ive just started to work as a freelance make-up artist in the last few years after spending a long time working and snowboarding in the French Alpes. I love surfing and snowboarding and travel a lot to do these things when I can.

What is your personal relationship with make-up?

I was fascinated with make-up at a very early age. I started copying looks on myself, icons like Brigitte Bardot, Edie Sedgewick, Marilyn Monroe and Debbie Harry (one of my favourites!) and I loved experimenting with colours and always wearing my “cats eyes”. I love finding new products and experimenting with them.

What were your initial reactions to finding out you’d be chosen from thousands to star in Illamasqua’s AW12 campaign?

I was in total shock, I thought it was a joke! I was absolutely delighted to find out I’d won the Illamasqua make-up too!!

Walking on set, how did it feel to be a model and experience a professional photoshoot?

I felt really relaxed as the girls made me feel very welcome and I felt comfortable in my clothes. Having my make-up done by Alex Box was a real privilege, she really is one of my real life heroes, I love her work, so I was well chuffed to have had it done, and I felt sexy and confident after getting my hair and make-up done by such a lovely team.

What did you think of your look and is there any piece you can’t wait to wear?

I love it! Rock chick all the way!

What was it like having your make-up done by Creative Director Alex Box?

Are you excited to see your imagery on Illamasqua counters across the world?

Hmmm a bit nervous about that, but yeah I’m quite excited!

What are your thoughts on our use of real women for our campaign?

I think it’s a great idea to use real people for your campaigns, it’s raw and exciting!

Why do you think that women should be empowered to wear bold, colourful make-up at any age?

Because age doesn’t matter, it’s how you feel on the inside that does, if you are confident about how you look, it shows.

What have you taken away with you from the whole experience?

I just think that anyone at any age can experiment with all sorts of colours and styles of make-up, you are never too old to get all dressed up, it’s about feeling good and showing parts of your personality off.

I had a great time meeting all the team as well as Alex Box, they really were lovely and I will remember that day for the rest of my life!

I’m now the proud owner of all the products I was luckily enough to win, and I absolutely love them! I’ve been practising lots of different looks and I’m just happy to have been a part of the campaign as I had a lovely day…

Stay tuned for our next AW12 reveal
