Illamasqua’s Distinction In Make-up Artistry Awards winner 2011 – Sasha Wren

In October 2011, 12 finalists battled it out to become the winner of their category in The Distinction In Make-up Artistry Awards. Sasha Wren was Illamasqua’s winner of the BA (Hons) division and won the chance to work with Alex Box. We caught up with Sasha to see how she was getting on after the competition, what she has been up to since and what it was like working with Alex Box on the latest Illamasqua Campaign Generation Q

How did it feel to win the competition?

I was at work when I received the news that I had won, I couldn’t believe it, I screamed and then realised I was going to assist Alex Box, I could not wait! I told everybody once it had been revealed that I had won! I had people contacting me and congratulating me, local papers and magazines ran stories on my success, it was crazy! I attended the Illamasqua Masquerade Halloween ball with my boyfriend to celebrate and received my award, I loved it! It’s in my bedroom and my friend had my winning photo blown up on a canvas for me. The whole experience has been amazing!

What have you been up to since the competition?

Since the competition I moved home from university, I graduated last November which was another brilliant day! I was so happy to be able to say that I had a degree in make-up design and had also won an international make-up competition. My hard work had paid off and my dream of being a make-up artist was coming true! I work full time as a make-up artist now which is great, I am still building my portfolio and love to push and experiment in new make-up ideas!

What would be your advice for anyone entering the competition this year?

For anybody thinking about entering this years competition it isn’t too late! I entered later on as well! The competition is so exciting, so be unique and send in designs which you personally love. Use the competition to push yourself! Good luck to everybody entering.

Why did you apply for the competition?

I have always loved Alex’s work and loved how unique Illamasqua is, so when I saw the competition I couldn’t wait to apply. The prizes as well were amazing, I had just finished my final major project at uni and thought some pieces worked well with the competition brief. I never imagined I would get into the final four, let alone win, but I quickly posted off my photos and entered.

What did you enjoy most about the live competition?

The live competition was amazing! All my family came to support me and to watch my presentation, I also used one of my sisters as my model. I hadn’t tested the full look as I work best when I am not following a set idea, I like to play with texture and colour. My design went well and my sister was completely transformed. I loved showing Alex and the other judges my moodboard and telling them the story behind the look. After my family and I celebrated with champagne, it was a fantastic day, one I will never forget!

What was it like working with Alex Box on the Shoot, which was your prize from last year competition?

Working with Alex Box was amazing. I love her work and she is a huge inspiration to me! On set I wasn’t too nervous as I had already met her at the live competition and the Halloween Ball. She is lovely! The two days on set was a dream come true, the days were long and it showed me how shoots work and how Alex works. Everybody was so kind and friendly and there was an exciting buzz. To watch Alex Box work was brilliant, she worked quickly and I learnt some great tips and techniques. I also enjoyed watching the photographers and stylists at work and watching the models being transformed. I have been so excited seeing the Generation Q images being revealed! It still doesn’t seem real that on my CV I can say I have assisted Alex Box!
