Illamasqua Interviews: Will Young’s Make-up Artist – Diana Hudson

The revival of Kander and Ebb’s ‘Cabaret’ the musical is residing at The Savory Theatre, London until 5th January 2013. Starring Will Young as Emcee and Michelle Ryan as Sally Bowles.

Cabaret is set in 1931 at The Kit Kat Club in Berlin making it a perfect match for Illamasqua, whose roots lie in pre-war Berlin. Spob (Head of Professional Development) caught up with Will Young’s Make-up Artist, Diana Hudson.
Spob started her career in Theatre and loves to revisit as often as she can, so she was over the moon when Diana could spare her a few moments to chat about make-up……..

What image came to mind when you knew you would be creating a look for Will?

I’m afraid I can’t take the full credit for Wills look. It was definitely a cooperative effort involving Will, Katrina Lindsay, (the shows designer) and what I knew I was creatively capable of. The Emcee has always been portrayed as a vampire, creature of the night, type figure and when Will brought this doll- like image to the table I was very excited!  I immediately thought of Illamasqua, as I am a huge fan of the foundations and lipsticks. It was only a matter of minutes before I pulled Eurydice out of my personal make-up bag and immediately; we knew it was what we needed.

Did you naturally think of Illamasqua when you got the call for this job?

I have been designing make-up for theatre whether it’s plays or musicals for over five years. I always go to Illamasqua first as I know the pigments are true and the product is fantastic!

What is your favourite Illamasqua product?

I love gleam cream, cream foundation, and I am HUGE fan of the cream shadows as base!

What is in your make-up bag that you can never leave the house without?

Stage make-up is a challenge; do you have any top tips that can be transferred to help keep our night-time looks fresh?

I think if you’re make-up is applied on a properly prepped face it should look great for most of the day. I’m a huge believer in under eye concealer and freshly applied lips. And never underestimate the power of a great blush!

If you could create a look for any actor (Will aside) who else would you love to design a look for?

I would love to design a look for Tallulah Bankhead. Wow. What a character!

Get the Look:
Blusher: Powder Blusher in Hussy
Eyebrows: Eye Brow Cake in Thunder
Eyes: Powder Eye Shadow in Wolf mixed with Sealing Gel
