This week, Illamasqua caught up with Australian blogger, Copy That Copy Cat to find out all about her blog, her favourite designs, who inspires her & who her alter ego is…
Name: Linda Khuu
A brief overview of who you are and what you do: I’m a 21-year-old Australian and lover of all things crafty, cool graphics and nails. I’m a student at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and I spend a lot of time doing my nails.
Tell us about your blog: My blog is a place where I like to document the nail art I’ve created throughout the years. It’s like an archive and a fantastic reminder of where I started and what I’ve become afterwards. It started with a desire to keep my manicures under file unintentional pun!), but then it became a destination for those who were interested in nail art and aspiring to be nail artists. It’s gone from something personal to a small community of nail art lovers.
Your Current Life: What are you up to at the moment? What are your future plans? Currently I’m studying full-time in my last semester doing a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications and working part-time at a hair & nail salon. I’m not too certain where it is I want to be in the future, it kind of scares me a little leaving university at the end of the year, but I’d like to be working in an area of interest (for e.g typography, infographics). Of course I’d like to think I can hit big with nail art (laughs), but most likely as a side venture, hard to determine at this point though!
Your Favorite Nail Art you have created: This is a tough one! If I had to pick just one, I’d probably go with the galaxy nails I did a while back, since they were ones I was most proud of. I love the colours in them and I received heaps of compliments on
them. Second runner up would have to be the Roy Lichtenstein inspired ones, because I love Pop Art!
Favorite Illamasqua nail varnish: Of the ones I have tried, I would have to say Stance. I never really liked purples, but this one leans more red than blue and complements my skin really well. Happy surprise on my end!
Your Personal Self: What are you most proud of? Where do you get your inspiration from? Aside from nails, when I took up internship at a small digital publishing business, my boss had put me in charge of dealing with one of their clients to create a logo and business collateral for a new upcoming coffee shop. I’m proud to say that it is now established in the city, using the identity I had created for them. It was a fantastic opportunity and I was glad that my boss had been so great as to hand me that responsibility.
Nail-wise, I would have to say inspiring others and setting up a Youtube account to create tutorials for everyone to view. Never in a million years would I ever have though of starting up a Youtube channel!
My inspirations come from everything – it’s a bit vague, but you can be inspired by absolutely anything. Staring out the window on a bus, taking notice of little things like clothes tags, books, packaging, fashion and all those things you never thought of looking at can create something fantastic. Don’t limit yourself!
Your Alter Ego: If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why? This is going to sound ridiculous, but I couldn’t decide on anyone and settled for a character from one of my favourite TV shows as a child – Mr Squiggle! I know it’s heaps childish, but I admire the fun he creates and the creativity he possesses to turn something so simple into something amazing – I’d like to live by that kind of philosophy.
Red Lips or Red Nails? Why? Honestly, this is going to be answered by process of elimination! Since I don’t really wear lipstick (I do like the look of red lipstick though), It’s going to be red nails. Red is such a classic colour that comes in so many shades to suit every skin type and they have been one of my first favourite nail colours.
