“Screw the biology, gender neutral isn’t a fashion fad. Because it’s not about being a girl, it’s not about being a boy. It’s about being free to explore your individuality; celebrating who you are today, and who you want to be tomorrow.” Julian Kynaston, Illamasqua Founder Illamasqua is a beauty brand with a voice, and encourages you to have one too. We are not afraid to be provocative and talk about the complex issues that affect our generation – whether they be religion, race, gender or the environment – as we seek to create an open, equal and diverse society.
That’s why for our latest campaign, we are exploring gender. Featuring long-term Illamasqua collaborator and activist, Munroe Bergdorf, alongside ‘gender capitalist’, Rain Dove.
“Gender is a very comforting thing to some people, and a lot of people are confused by fluidity. I don’t think gender and gender labels are bad, I think that gender reinforcement and limitations are bad. When people try to make others live a certain lifestyle just because they’re born with a specific genitalia and assigning them with duties and obligations, even sexpectations; it’s dangerous and its limiting. It’s not the label, it’s the limitation.”
“People are obsessed with gender because is all that we know, it’s what is drilled in to us at an early age. So once we start to let go of that, why can’t we challenge all of these things we’re told. They don’t matter. Once we start putting less importance on gender, we can start having fun with it, and it just becomes a lot more freeing.”
With our collective voice, Illamasqua encourage you to:
Never discriminate against race, colour, nationality, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation or religion
Accept responsibility on challenging social and climate issues
Speak for those who cannot speak up for themselves
