Here at Illamasqua, we’re huge fans of Downton Abbey.
With Series 4 set to premiere this evening, we caught up with Downton’s very own Make-up Artist for Hair and Make-up Designer, Magi Vaughan, for all of her make-up chair secrets.
Which character’s make-up was the most exciting to create this series? It has to be Lady Edith; she is the most fashionable of the sisters and experiments much more. She has the ideal face for this period.
Have any characters had significant changes to their make-up this time? Rose has changed the most as she’s been ‘Downton Abbey’d’ and is now a sophisticated young lady.
Which Illamasqua product was your #1 on set? Illamasqua have been imperative in creating the look of Downton – no other eye shadows come close. The texture and colours allowed me to create the softness but strong look of Downton.
Are there any scenes you can tell us about in which the make-up is really prominent, or different to what we’re used to seeing? Whenever we do a grand scene with the upper classes, set in the town as opposed to the country, we go for smoky eyes and cupid lips. This is where Illamasqua comes into it’s own because of the fabulous colours.
Has the time scale had an impact on the make-up used in this series? The time scale doesn’t move very much at all until we get to the Christmas special. In that, you’ll see it moved onto 1923 and the colours become more prominent.
For viewers watching and wanting to recreate a classic ‘Downton Abbey’ fresh look, which products would you recommend? My favourites are Powder Eye Shadows in Toxic (Warm Coral Nude) and Dizzy (Warm Dusty Rose). Then of course the fabulous colourless powder (Loose Powder) in 010, red Lipstick in Maneater, Powder Blushers in Lover (Soft Apricot) and Naked Rose (Neutral Beige Pink), and finally Cream Blushers in Rude (Warm Peach Pink) and Zygomatic (Naked Pink Brown).
Be sure to tune into ITV at 9pm tonight for the Series 4 premiere, an exciting 90 minute episode! Tomorrow I’m going to use Magi’s tips to create a Downton Abbey inspired make-up tutorial so be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel – www.youtube.com.illamasqua.
