Exclusively for the Illamasqua blog, we have put together Empowered: This Is Me, a series of interviews with individuals who felt empowered to speak-up and tell their story after reading Illamasqua’s Anti-Fascism Pledge. Shaheen Kauser aka @mummillion tells us her story below…
Tell us a little bit about why you took the time to contact us after our Anti-Fascism pledge…
I have been inspired by SOPHIE’s story and it was her story, which made me the individual I am. Sophie was unique. No one should be discriminated against because of what they wear, look like, believe and so forth.
Is there a particular part of our pledge, which resonates with you?
Sophie’s part of the pledge resonates with me and brings back floods of emotions of when she and her boyfriend were brutally murdered.
Have you ever been victimised personally?
I was victimised and bullied at the age of 11 being one of the only Muslims at the secondary school I attended. The normal day would start off as being spat at, tripped over, punched, and kicked regularly. At the time I did not understand why me? Only now and years later I came to realise, it was ME! I was different. I wasn’t like everyone else, not the same skin tone and didn’t share the same faith or beliefs.
Do you think more brands should stand up & challenge extremist views?
Everyone and every brand who have a conscience should be rallying and pledging against extremist views. Respect is earned not given!
If you could talk to everyone in the world for 5 minutes, what would you say?
Hatred divides communities, love unites us! Lets take the time and speak to people who don’t share our views and try to understand each other’s way of life, perhaps only then can we love, respect and move forward positively.
Tell us about your goals… where do you aspire to be in 5 years?
In 5 years time I would like to see the fruits of this pledge’s labor.
What one thing do you love about being you?
I love being a positive female representative of my faith.
